Hajira Taj, Trainer-Monitor (T.M), BMP schools
“I like to work and play with children. I chose to become a TM to reach more children. In Akshara, we are trained and given more knowledge-I am now more confident to go out and talk to people.”

“Akshara’s aim is to give children a good education and to make them good citizens. Through my work at Akshara, I hope to increase the number of extra-curricular activities for children in BMP schools, like quizzes and sports competitions. Education is after all not just for rich children. It is every child’s right.”

Tasmiya, Area Coordinator, South 2 block
“When I finished school, my class teacher told me about Akshara and encouraged me to teach. Earlier, I never used to go out much. After Akshara’s training, I was selected as a TM. Though I was nervous, I convinced my parents to let me work as it was in the same area. I learnt a lot. For example, I had never seen a police station before but I had to visit them for mapping etc. Now everyone calls me ‘teacher, teacher’, when they see me on the roads. I want to involve the whole community in this work, for the benefit of the children. Akshara has done a lot but we still have a lot to do.”

Ruhi Naaz, Outreach Program in-charge, DJ Halli
“I have been with Akshara for 3 years. I din’t want to sit at home after studying and wanted to become a teacher. When I didn’t get a post elsewhere, I joined Akshara as a balwadi and bridge course volunteer, and then worked as a TM. I have now learnt how to interact with all kinds of people. I wanted to create change, but by myself this wasn’t easy. When I joined Akshara, I got training and became effective in changing society. I am very confident of my abilities now. I am not scared to go into the field. I can work in any organization thanks to what I have learnt at Akshara.”
