Partner Organizations in North Karnataka 

1. SIRE (Social Initiatives for Rural Empowerment):

SIRE is an organization based in Yadgir in Gulbarga district. SIRE has been focusing on the livelihood issues of tribals – their rights, migration issues, developing alternate occupations etc. It has formed over 200 Self Help Groups (SHGs). The organization is concerned with poor educational status of the tribals.

SIRE is working with Akshara in Yadgir and Shahapur Talukas of Gulbarga district.

2. Krishna Grameen Bank (KGB):

KGB is a regional rural bank sponsored by State Bank of India and is operating in Gulbarga and Bidar districts. The Bank has focused on forming Self Help Groups. It has more than 2000 groups.

KGB is partnering with Akshara in Aland and Afzalpur blocks of Gulbarga district.

3. Prawarda:

It has headquarters in Basavkalyan in Bidar district and. and focuses on watershed development, tank development and improvement in agriculture. It has also started a micro finance institution. It has 900 SHGs.

PRAWARDA has launched educational programs in Basavkalyan and Humnabad Taluka of Bidar district.

4. National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI), Gulbarga:

NCUI is a project of Government of India to build the capacities of Cooperative institutions. They have specially helped the cooperatives in the district to start and finance Self Help Groups. This has brought new vibrancy in cooperatives. NCUI now joins hands with Akshara in starting educational initiatives through these SHGs in Jewargi Taluka of Gulbarga district.

5. World Vision:

World Vision is a national NGO that works in many parts of the country. They have an integrated approach to development – improving education, health and income levels. They are implementing Akshara programs in Gulbarga and Chittapur blocks of Gulbarga district.

6. Prerna:

PRERANA is a well-known NGO in Raichur district. It has focused on promoting lift irrigation and implementing tank rehabilitation project in collaboration with Government of Karnataka. PRERANA has started large number of SHGs in Raichur and Gulbarga districts. PRERANA will partner with Akshara in Raichur and Deodurg blocks of Raichur district.

7. Janakalyan

Janakalyan is a NGO in a rehabilitation camp of thousands of Bangla families who came to India as refugees in 1971 in Sindhnur Taluka of Raichur district. Their focus has been agriculture development.

Janakalyan is implementing Akshara work in Sindhnur and Manvi Taluks of Raichur district.

8. Grameen Makkal Sarvangin Vikas Kendra (GMSVK) Murkawad.

GMSVK is an organization run in a small village, Murkawad in Haliyal Taluk of Uttar Kannad district. They have a residential school where they take in children with average scores and convert them to first classes and distinctions.

GMSVK will implement similar work in Kalghatgi Taluk, Dharwad district with Akshara.

9. Agriculture Science Foundation, Hulkoti (Gadag district)

ASF is a well-known NGO operating for over a decade. Its focus has been improving the incomes of farmers ASF now wants to integrate health and education into its work and is happy to work with Akshara in Gadag and Mundargi blocks of Gadag district.

10. Basaveshwar Vidya Vardhak (BVV) Sangh Bagalkot:

BVV Sangh is a well-known educational institution of Bagalkot district. It has 98 institutions from Balwadis to a medical college. Apart from educational institutions, BVV also has a rural development trust that runs variety of programs.

The trust is partnering with Akshara to start programs in Bagalkot and Badami taluks of Bagalkot district.
