“Nali-kali” methodology of teaching is popular and is
being implemented in several Districts of Karnataka. There was a
felt need expressed by teachers, parents and experts for some new
reading material for children based on this methodology. From this
was born the idea of producing a set of Graded Readers. Janashala
and UNICEF entrusted this task to us and we had to prepare 50 Readers
for the 1st Standard and 50 Readers for the 2nd Standard, which
would blend with the Nali-Kali Learning Ladder.
A ‘Reader’, as the name suggests,
provides reading material for children. The reading material is
numbered and contents are graded from simple to more complex reading
skills. Thus, as children climb from Reader number 1 to 2 and 3
and so on, they will encounter progressively newer letters; newer
words will be added to their vocabulary and they will read longer
sentences. Unlike in a textbook, there is no pressure on the child
to prepare for an exam. Each child can proceed at her/his individual
pace, since it is not an activity that involves the entire class.
Children are given the joy of discovering something on their own.
The set of 50 Readers for the 1st standard are
under print and will soon reach young hands in schools. We hope
these attractive, and enjoyable Readers will create the love of
reading in these little children.
