Education is a fundamental right.
Every child deserves to be in school and learning well. All over
the world we see a close correlation between
levels of education and human development indices.
Akshara Foundation believes that for universalisation
of elementary education to become a reality in Bangalore and the
rest of Karnataka, we need to build strong partnerships between
the government, the voluntary sector, including citizens from different
communities, and the corporate sector. Akshara is a successful example
of such a public-private partnership.
Akshara Foundation was set up as a public charitable
trust in March 2000. Our mission: to help ensure Universal Quality
Elementary Education for every child up to fourteen years of age
in Bangalore. Our first work started in a few slums in Bangalore
city, with just a handful of volunteers. The initiative rapidly
picked up momentum. It fulfilled a latent need in the communities
for quality education and also tapped into the energy and potential
of hundreds of young people, mainly women, who came forward to promote
education issues in their neighbourhoods.
Akshara is part of the Pratham Network,
a national initiative that has helped over a million children gain
access to quality primary education on
To date, Akshara has touched
the lives of close 100,000 children in and around the city of Bangalore.
However, there are thousands more we still need to reach.
